Dressées sur leur promontoire naturel ou adossées au relief, on les appelle « sentinelles ». Mais elles ne sont pas muettes : une trentaine de fortifications édifiées dans les Alpes du XVIe au XXe s, pour une large part à proximité de la frontière franco-italienne, racontent le passé, le présent... et l'avenir.
L'histoire, d'abord. Celle des stratégies militaires pour posséder, contrôler, quelles que soient l'époque et l'actualité des conflits, les points névralgiques du massif : chemins, routes, cols, portes d'entrée des hautes vallées. Les « Sentinelles » nous parlent de ruse, d'attente et de chaos, de soldatesque. Mais aussi d'un génie architectural combinant contraintes naturelles et efficacité défensive.
Longtemps ignorés, délaissés, les forts d'altitude sont aujourd'hui réinvestis par des collectivités, des associations, des particuliers. Des passionnés qui cherchent à les faire revivre à travers des visites guidées, des animations ou des manifestations culturelles. A son rythme, le voyageur – à pied, à vélo, en voiture, ou à moto... – peut aujourd'hui découvrir une partie importante de ce patrimoine fortifié : chemins de ronde, remparts, casernements. Et lui apporter, de par sa présence et sa curiosité, une nouvelle vitalité.
Les forts d'altitude attestent des relations anciennes entre les communautés de part et d'autre de la frontière. Mais surtout de leurs identités et de leurs cultures propres. Du même coup, les « Sentinelles » nous parlent aussi de l'Europe d'aujourd'hui et de demain. D'une communauté alpine à la fois diverse et regroupée, dans le respect et l'échange.
