In the heart of the lavender fields, an astonishing mixture of colors captivates the visitors : the ocher of the quarries of Rustrel, the garnet of the castle of Mane, and the white of the bories (small constructions of stone) at the foot of the Mountain of Lure.

Enjoy, in these postcard landscapes, scents of thyme and rosemary at Simiane-la-Rotonde, an ancient medieval fortress built among lavender fields.

Author’s recommendation

The road is passable from April to November. Some areas in the plain can be visited all year round.

Outside the summer flowering period, spring (May, June) and autumn (September, October) are ideal, especially for photographers and discovery enthusiasts. And most offers are available to welcome you.

If you want to admire the lavender in bloom, June and July are the months to privilege. We invite you to consult the flowering periods according to the geographical sectors.

Turn-by-turn directions

Leaving Ferrassières, going down to Sault, the route crosses the perched village of Aurel then takes a road that overlooks the lavender fields of Val de Sault. In Sault, several distilleries worth a visit just as the legendary Mont Ventoux which is not far away.

After crossing the Croc bridge towards Apt and Luberon the route crosses a wild landscape where the lavender of the heights is cultivated. Sumptuous panoramas on the plain of Sault and Luberon mark out this course.

In Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt, do not miss the perched village and the honey tasting at the Moulin Jullien. Then, in the middle of the vineyards, we reach the city center of Apt, Roman city, on Via Domicia between Rome and Arles, towards Santiago de Compostela.

From Apt, after having crossed Rustrel and its ochres, the route joins Simiane-la-Rotonde, hanging on the eastern flank of the Albion plateau. We then go to the foot of Montsalier, perched village abandoned in the nineteenth century and we joined Banon, its cheese, its bookstore and its lavender fields.

Then keep in focus the summit of Lure while following the distilleries to Hospitalet, where start many hikes.

The descent to Forcalquier takes a road through Lardiers, Ongles, le Revest des Brousses and Saint Michel l'Obeservatoire. Here, lavender plays hide and seek with the garigue ...

The stage ends in style with the medieval village of Mane, and its Prieuré de Salagon, before joining Forcalquier, the capital of the region, merchant city and former stronghold in the Middle Ages.
